This is how GH music industry will benefit from Spotify’s launch in Ghana

The announcement of Spotify launching in 85 new markets including Ghana has got a lot of people in the Ghanaian music industry really excited.

What is Spotify and why should Ghanaians revel in their arrival in Ghana?

Spotify is a Swedish audio streaming and media services provider, launched in October 2008. Spotify offers digital copyright restricted recorded music and podcasts, including more than 70 million songs, from record labels and media companies

According to Nana Yaw Wiredu of OnePlayAfrica, a content creator and music business expert, Ghanaians should be enthused about the launch of Spotify in Ghana because it is the world’s biggest music service and they have bigger numbers in terms of listeners and subscribers (paid) so if they come Ghana music gets introduced to a bigger market.

He also told ghanaweekend.com that “Spotify helps in regulating our music system- so you see how we looking for login system and all, Spotify already has a mechanism they used to calculate plays and tell which song has the biggest plays so they bring some sort of structure in our music system.”

Again, Nana Yaw noted that the royalties payment system of Spotify is not the biggest but it is good. Our Ghanaian artists get to enjoy good revenue since Spotify is the best and biggest music streaming globally.

He, however, advised that they must do more education on their platform for the mass audience to understand how their platform works.

Another Ghanaian content creator and publicist, Jonilar also told ghanaweekend.com that he is happy the streaming service is coming to Ghana because it pays better than most of the streaming platforms, they are content-centered and also take issues of piracy seriously.

Jonilar added that Spotify’s transparency with stats will now get to know how much exactly they pay for their streams.

Spotify’s announcement comes at a time when creatives have been banned from hosting live shows due to the coronavirus outbreak. The major means of income for creatives has been through digital marketing
