Divine Ikubor, known professionally as Rema, a Nigerian singer and rapper has urged music fans, entertainment critics and promoters not to compare his craft to any of the heroes and pioneers of Afro-beats music in the Nigerian entertainment fraternity.
According to the Jonzing World (a subsidiary of Mavin Records) signee, comparing him to legends at this stage of his career will affect his fandom and potentially retard the growth of his career, but, they should rather acknowledge the pedestal Afro-beats (contemporary pop music made in West Africa and the diaspora) music genre has attained.v
In a tweet, the “Dumebi” hitmaker stated, Afrobeat is a movement and they need all the support to trumpet the genre to reach higher heights, adding that, the comparisons between him and his heroes are unnecessary. He urged them to desist from denigrating talents but, rather celebrate where Afrobeat is at today and focus on where it will be tomorrow.
Rema rose to prominence with the release of the song “Iron Man”, which appeared on Barack Obama’s 2019 summer Playlist. On 19 October 2019, Rema won Next Rated and was nominated for Viewer’s Choice at the 13th edition of The Headies. On 12 January 2020 he received the Souncity mvp for best new artist.
