Church sold to mosque after religious conversion

A Roman Catholic church has been sold to the Muslim community after attendance levels dropped so much that the parish could no longer justify keeping it open.

St Peter’s Church in Cobridge, Stoke-on-Trent, closed its doors in July last year after the congregation fell from more than 150 to 40. It has now been sold to the Madina Mosque.

Although the intended use of the 1930s building is still unconfirmed, a spokesman for the church said that it was likely “to be used as a place of worship for the Muslim community”.

The trustees were inundated with offers from commercial buyers and other faith groups. However, they felt that the bid from the Muslim community was the strongest.
