SEPTEMBER 29, 2018: AYA (THE FERN)

A three leg dance piece which deals with issues of life after death, political and socio-economic
activities of ancient African empire and the human dilemma.

 What happens in life after death? Have you ever wondered what will happen to you when
you die today? What happens to your soul? Where does it go? Will humans give an
account of their life to their creator? Is there a higher power that controls the spiritual
realm? The universe was not created by chance. New world unfolds the mystery behind
life after death.

 “Olonka”! is a choreography that captures the political and social-economic activities of
ancient African empire namely, Timbutu, Zulu, Yoruba, Dahomey, Asante and the
Pharaohs. The Piece also hoots at Ecowas as white elephant, and addresses the truth that
the sovereignty of African states cannot be validated by hypocritical patriotism of our
identity, but rather substantial reliance on our economic ability, just as our forefathers set
up their own economic standard of measuring quality with their black-smith pan – the
“Olonka”.

 “The Shell” unfolds the events of an energy –sucking entity and its new prey. The piece
is dominated by neo-traditional and contemporary West African dance idioms. “The
Shell” follows the story of a resilient feminine protagonist through intervention
movements from different dance genres which attempts to mimic the variety of the forms
of encounter that transcends the journey of our protagonist. “The shell” examines the
dilemma of introverted personalities by questioning whether or not a person should open
up completely to society losing their individualities or standing alone in their shell with
the intentions of either staying there or hoping for an emerging community that would
embrace and appreciate her uniqueness. It is an attempt to usurp standing norms to allow
for reassessment and reorganization of current society to accommodate new development
and evolution. The audience is tasked with giving the final verdict for our protagonist,
deciding whether she will lose this battle or keep standing, may be guide her in her
conquest for peace.
