Popular Ghanaian rapper, M.anifest, has revealed that he prefers to work with female songwriters whenever he has the chance because he believes they are better then their male counterparts. Speaking during an interview with the BBC’s Veronique Edwards on Wednesday, M.anifest expressed that his experience has been that female songwriters bring a interesting twist to music that is refreshing to listen to.
“I want to see more women producers…I think that will change the sound and make it more interesting,” he said. According to him, the disparagingly low amount of women in the African music industry, in comparison to men, is due to the insecurity of certain male stakeholders in the industry. He said some men prefer to keep talented women in the background in order for them not to feel threatened. He also touched on instances of female rivalry in the music industry, and expressed that these instances are unproductive since there’s enough room for everyone. “It makes it more exciting because you just can’t have this testosterone-heavy scene which makes it one way. I am anti one way…. On every show I do, I try to balance the energy with women…I love working and performing with women artiste that is why I worked with them on every album.” He said.
